Any 6th, 7th, or 8th grader at Frederick H. Tuttle Middle School may choose to study Spanish or French. The South Burlington School District has developed an articulated K-12 French and Spanish program. Therefore, most of our students come from an elementary school having either studied Spanish or French. They begin the Spanish program in 6th grade with wonderful enthusiasm to speak Spanish and with considerable knowledge of language structures in either French or Spanish.

What are the goals of the Spanish program at FHTMS?

In the middle school the student is introduced to the language and culture of the Spanish-speaking world. Students begin to learn to be proficient in the language at the novice level and become knowledgeable about the cultures of the Spanish speaking world.

Emphasis is placed on helping the student to communicate orally. A high level of student participation is achieved through the use of materials and activities designed to enable the student to use the language correctly for communication. The basic skills of listening and comprehension are stressed. Reading and writing activities are also incorporated into the program.

Special emphasis is placed on studies of the Hispanic culture in the United States.

Middle school students can earn 2 high school language credits by successfully completing Spanish II at South Burlington High School in their freshman year. In 6th and 7th grades, the students complete the equivalent of Spanish 1A at the high school and in 8th grade, they complete the equivalent of Spanish 1B.

  • 6th grade Spanish students have twenty five minute classes every day.

  • 7th grade Spanish students have fifty minute classes every other day, alternating 2 and 3 times a week.

  • 8th grade Spanish students have fifty minute classes everyday.
