Life in Ancient Greece
Can you imagine that women weren't allowed outside and they couldn't go out to the Market? Almost 4,000 years ago people called the Minoons lived in the Greek Islands. All boys were trained hard from an early age. I will be talking about the Greeks, their homes , their work , the difference between rich and poor, what they wore, what they ate, and what they did for entertainment.
The women would mostly stay home . Women learned how to do spinning, weaving and other skills. Women spent most of their time at home. Women's husbands expected them to stay at home, not to argue, and stay out of the way when guests came over. Women cooked and prepared food. Girls did not go to school. They stayed home with their mothers and helped.
Men sometimes went to the theater to see dramas. Men went out at the crack of dawn to work or do shopping. The men did not return home until night fall, when it was time for dinner. After the boy's sixth birthday they went off to school.
Water had to be carried by the men from public fountains . It was the job of women to spin thread and weave it into cloth. If the women were wealthy they owned slaves to help them. There 1,000 slaves in ancient Greece.
Citizens that lived in Greece earned a living from some kind of work. People worked in workshops, were traders, blacksmiths, shoemakers and fish traders. Some people were also slaves. A lot of men were farmers and they grew food for their family. Many of the poor people were slaves.
At school a lot of people studied advanced math, science and art, including algebra, geometry and geology. The young men wrote on tables. It was like their piece of paper. The young men went to school during the morning. The young men brought in new tables every day.
What did they eat? The Greeks ate many types of seafood. That was mostly what they ate. Farmers grew some grains, like wheat and barley and kept goats to provide milk and cheese. Most of the people raised chickens and ate regularly. Olives were part of their basic diet.
Greek men mostly wore a tunic, a sort of knee-length t-shirt made out of wool or linen. Over the tunic they wore a wool cloak if it was cold out. Their legs were bare , and they wore leather sandals when they weren't barefoot. Greek women wore one large piece of wool or linen wrapped around them and pinned in various ways to make it stay. One way was to fold the cloth in half and put it so that the fold in the cloth came under your right armpit and down your right side.
For entertainment people played sports. Sports were very important in Greece and good athletes were regarded with respect. All boys got trained hard from an early age. The main sports were running, long jump, wrestling ,javelin and discuss throwing . Few women were allowed to take part in sporting events.
Who were they ruled by? What was their government like? In September 1968,the Greek electorate approved a new constitution drawn up by the ruling military junta. But the king was deprived of much of the authority vested in him by the constitution of 1952. On June 1,1973 the council of minister abolished the monocracy and proclaimed Greece a republic. The junta resigned the civilians government was restarted in July1974. Greek voters declined to reestablish the monocracy in a referendum the following December.
Today the people of most countries have a small share in the running the nation. The democracy of Ancient Greece city state was quite different. The state was small, and all of the states were quite different. Slaves were not citizens. Citizens thought that government was one of the most important things in their life. The Assembly met at the average once a month. The citizens of Greek city states were the first people to use democracy government.
In conclusion, in daily life in Greece I didn't know that women had to stay home all day. I couldn't believe that women had to stay home all day and cook and prepare food.
