Beavers are herbivores, which means they eat plants only. In spring and summer they eat leaves, herbs, ferns, grasses and algae. In winter they eat the tree bark that they had taken off trees in the fall, and stored in their dams. Lifecycle The mother gives birth to 8 baby beavers. The babies live with the mother for a year, until they are up to 3 years old, and the female has more babies. Then the children are kicked out , to live on their own. They usually will live in the same stream or river as their families, just farther away. Mating Process: The beaver first finds a mate. They have a litter and stay together for life. The female is pregnant for 3 months. Then she gives birth to usually 8 kits (baby beavers.) The average life span for a beaver is 10-15 years. |
