A Must Read: My Louisiana Sky
By Mary Brooks
The story My Louisiana Sky by Kimberly Willis Holt is a good example of how life would be in the 1950's if you lived in the country. It is also a good example of how it would be to live with someone who is mentally disabled in that time era. One big thing that made this book enjoyable was the characters. They were very strong and helped each other throughout the book.
This story took place in a country town called Saitter in Louisiana. The book explained the lives and ways of the people in the town. Where they worked, the chores they had, and what they did. The author also described how Tiger, (the main character,) felt and dealt with her mentally disabled mother and father. When the family went to a church picnic and her mother took off her shoes and chased the younger children around, it would make Tiger wonder why her mother wasn't like other mothers. She felt the same when her father had to have someone else write his bills for him, because he didn't understand how to write checks. Tiger would learn to love them despite their disabilities.
This book was very well written, and had good morals to it. It was also very easy to follow and had excellent characters. I liked it for all of these reasons and I think other people will, too.
