Ex Best Friends

"How high can you jump?" Bob said to Ana on a warm day in New York City.

"I don’t know," said Ana "I bet I can jump higher than you, though."

"You’re on" he accepted. Then he jumped so high, he could have done a back flip and landed on his feet. "Beat that," he said as cocky as can be.

"Okay." She jumped maybe two feet off the ground but something miraculous happened. Feathery wings sprouted from her back and she flew up another ten feet.

That is how best friends Bob Windshell and Ana Mee became rivals.

A few days later this story begins:

"Hey Ana," said an eighth–grader at recess. "How high can you fly?"

"Pretty high, want to see?" questioned Ana.

"Sure" said the eighth-grader, anxious to witness her efforts.

Ana flew upward 20 feet in the air, but the higher she flew the harder it was to control her wings. Ana screamed a piercing shriek as she took a sharp left turn into the window of a tall skyscraper.

When Bob heard the news he thought it served her right for being able to fly. However, when the other kids heard of this they brought her cards, gifts, and everything they thought would make her feel better. When Bob heard that she was in a coma he started to feel sorry for his ex-best friend. Three days later when everyone in the school heard that Ana was out of the coma everyone (including Bob) brought her more cards gifts and candy than ever.

A week later Ana came back from the hospital and back to school. On her way home, crossing 32nd Street, a hobo came out from around the corner, took her purse and backpack, and ran away shouting triumphantly, "I’m rich! No more uncooked Ramen Noodles for me!" Now normally she would have chased him, swooped down and taken her stuff back, but the doctor had said she could not fly until tomorrow.

The next day there was a spelling bee. Everyone in the school knew that the two best spellers in the school were Bob and Ana. There were eight students to start with. The first word was xylophone. The student spelled that wrong so they were out and the word was passed on to the next student. It went on that way until it was down to Bob and Ana. Bob got a word that he knew he could spell right; he wanted Ana to win because he started to feel sorry for her, as did everyone else. The word was Qatar, the country. He knew Ana could spell it so he spelled it: K-A-T-A-R. Next, Ana spelled it right and won the spelling bee.

That day at school, Ana told everyone about the hobo. When she finally told Bob, he said that the seventh grade bully, Frederic Turkz had beaten him up.

      " That’s a coincidence," she stated.

" I know," said Bob, " I wish there was some way I could… wait! That’s it! I could get you some school supplies with my emergency money if you helped me." He exclaimed.

" I could fly into him and say ‘that was from Bob!’" she suggested.

      " That’s perfect." Bob agreed.

Therefore, the next day they did just that.

That is the story of how Bob Windshell and Ana Mee came from best friends to ex best friends to ex rivals.
