Porcupines live alone except in mating season.
Porcupines are primarily found in coniferous forests but are also found in deciduous or mixed forests.  Since they are highly adaptable they may be found in open tundra, rangelands, and deserts.  When away from forests they usually remain in vegetated riparian areas.
The porcupine's range is Northern Mexico, Canada, Alaska, and the United States of America except the extreme southwestern states, and the extreme southeastern and gulf coast states.
