Alexander the Great

Who is Alexander the Great?  He lived in Greece all of his life.  This biography includes Alexander's background and childhood.  It also includes how he came to power and his accomplishments.  Lastly, I will tell how Alexander died.

Alexander had a very interesting childhood.  He was born  July 20, 365 B.C. In Pella, Macedonia.  Alexander's father was King Philip and  his mother was Olympias.  Alexander and his mother had a very strong mother-son relationship.  They liked to do every thing together.  His father didn't have as strong as a relationship with Alexander as Alexander had with his mother, Olympias.

King Philip and Olympias really wanted Alexander to get a good education.  So they got  Olympias's uncle, Leonidas to tutor Alexander.  Leonidas was very strict.  His second tutor was Lysimach.  He got Alexander interested in music, poetry, and drama.  Alexander's last tutor was Aristotle.  Aristotle was probably Alexander's favorite tutor.  While Aristotle tutored Alexander he got Alexander interested in science, medicine, and philosophy.

Alexander the Great became King at the age of 20, because his father, King Philip was killed by an old time rival.  He was submitted to the throne in the summer of 336 B.C.

After Alexander became king he had a lot of accomplishments .  Alexander's first action was a battle against Persia, Egypt, and beyond the Indus River which  got him the name, ''Alexander the Great.''  Alexander's energy and military genius helped him succeed in battle.  While King he established cities, most of them were named after himself.  In 336 B.C. he reestablished his position in Greece.  His army  crushed in a single week the Iiiyrians.  Alexander then surprised the Thebes, razed the city, and spared the temples.  In 333 B.C. the battle of Issus ended in great victory for Alexander.  In 332 B.C. Alexander founded at the mouth of the Nile River, Alexandria.

Next, Alexander began another battle with the Persians.  He defeated the Persians.  Alexander only lost 110 men in that battle.  While passing through Phrygia, Alexander cut the Gordian knot.

There are many theories of how Alexander the Great diedIt is definite though that he died at the age of 33 on Thursday June, 6 323 B.C.  This is one theory of how he died.  Alexander proceeded to Babylon one day.  Once there , he drank heavily at several banquets. One of the banquets was held by one of his good friends.  Several people put poison in his wine.  After he drank the wine he said, ''It feels like I have been hit by an arrow in my liver.''  Alexander tried to throw up the poison.  The people then gave him a poison feather which made sure the poison stayed in his blood system.  He proceeded to get sicker.  Then on Thursday June, 6 323 B.C. Alexander died.

So now you know about Alexander the Great.  He was a great Greek King, a brilliant man at war, and was very smart.  He also accomplished many things while King of Greece.
