Customs, Clothing, & Holidays

Ecuadorians greatly prize individuality. Each person wishes to distinguish himself as "hidalgo" which means "son of somebody." This shows why birth, race, and upbringing are so important to "la genta buena" (means "the good" or "respectable people") Ecuadorians place great emphasis on the family, which they define as immediate and extended kin, including grandparents. They also prize community. |
One of the most important holidays on the church calendar is Easter. Easter brings an occasion for great celebration. Easter is celebrated after mass on Easter Sunday, the family gathers and has a feast of traditional dishes. Another holiday that most Ecuadorians celebrate is New Year's. It's celebrated on the December 31. To celebrate, people light bonfires and stuff old clothes to make life-size puppets. |
The women in Ecuador wear a variety of things. They wear skirts, nice slacks, and/or button-up shirts. The men in Ecuador wear some different things. They wear slacks, button-up shirts, and/or a tie if possible. Children in Ecuador wear basically a few things. I only know of one thing children wear, which is a three piece uniform which they wear to school. |
