The Dragons
By: Luke
It is September 3, 1704. Wizard Mandar wakes up feeling pleasant and ready for the day. The sun is shining and the birds are singing, and it seems like nothing could go wrong. But the wizard was unaware that this day would change his life.
"What a wonderful day," said Wizard Mandar cheerfully. "Maybe I will go and collect some rocks from the cave I've recently dicovered." So at once it was settled. He packed a picnic and a lantern, but left some extra room for the rocks.
Wizard Mandar set off on his journey. He arrived to the cave in no time. Even in broad daylight the cave looked grim, like it wanted to hide something from him. He started to see a shadow of something large, but all he could make out was a pair of wings. Suddenly, he saw a burst of burning flames and he quickly ducked and hid behind a rock, before he dared to look again. A enormous blue and green dragon stood there, showing its fierce teeth to him, and quickly flew away. After a moment of slowing his heart rate down, Wizard Mandar returned to look for more rocks.
As he proceeded, he saw a colossal egg that seemed to have been abandoned. He didn't have the heart to leave it there. He took it home.
The next day the egg hatched. A blue-green dragon emerged, with a big head and fiery eyes. On either side of its head there was a gray and white horn.
"Scratch," said Mandar. That was the baby’s new name."Scratch, you know you can’t stay here much longer and you know you need your mother…and really I can’t afford to keep feeding you. I’m sorry but at least we can try to find your mother. "
"We need to get ready. Do you think you can fly all that way?" said Mandar.
"I can but how are you going to fly? I can’t carry you," said Scratch doubtfully.
" No, you won’t have to. This flying carpet will," Mandar said as if it was the simplest, most ordinary thing ever.
So after two or so hours they were ready. They set off looking quite intimidating so the Coast Guard "didn’t see them" pass through. They were making good time searching from three stories high over the lush green wildlife of the Enchanted Forest. At about 8:00 it started to get dark so they decided to stop for the night.
After a while of feeling like they were being watched a group of hungry ogres emerged out of nowhere. Since that was the Enchanted Forest nowhere is probably somewhere. Anyway, they were enormous, slimy, green ogres with one hand clenched in a fist and the other holding a big spiked wooden club with dried blood all over it.
Then, a mere squirrel popped out of nowhere and shot something at them and POOF, they were gone. The squirrel turned around. He had a brown hazelnut back with a milky white underside. He spoke in a casual tone politely stating his name, Chestnut.
He asked, "Why are you here and what are your names?" At first Mandar was unsure whether to answer. Then he realized that the squirrel had just saved his life. So, he decided to tell him the whole thing. The squirrel listened intently and seemed interested. Chestnut was invited to come along since he had said that he had also seen a dragon.
They set off the next morning in the direction that Chestnut said that the dragon had gone. They flew for about two hours and saw a cave. They decided to check it out. They looked at it for about ten minutes and decided it was empty. Then Mandar did a double take and it seemed almost obvious. At the top of the cliff there was a group of baby dragons. Scratch half jumped and half flew up the cliff. He saw his mother for the first time!
Mandar and the squirrel took turns helping the mother dragon with magic because she was hurt. After she had healed enough to take care of all the babies Mandar and Chestnut set off for home. They decided that Chestnut could live with Mandar since he would not be so hard to feed and Mandar needed a friend. Scratch and his brothers and sisters did great things in. Wizard Mandar and Chestnut lived happily for many more years.
