These are two young ladies playing the guitar on stage for their fellow Uruguayans.

The main food Uruguayans eat is meat. Beef, blood sausage, pastry turnovers, hot dogs, you name it, they eat it. They call blood sausage moncilla, which is there favorite meat. Pastry turnovers are known as empanadas. Hot dogs are known as olimpicos, hungaros, and panchos. Another favorite is a meat stew called estofado. It is a very healthy stew originated in the open plains.

A typical family meal includes meat as the central dish with potatoes, bread, and a green salad. Potatoes are usually accompanied by huge slabs of steak.

Mate (MAH-tay) is a herbal tea that is very important to drink during a meal. Leaves are harvested from a European Holly tree. To make mate you pack a mate cup or gourd full of leaves. Then you ad hot water and leave it to steep. When done, you poor the drink into the special leaves. Mate has a very bitter, acquired taste.
