Customs, Entertainment, And Holidays

 Nicaraguan's like to celebrate at fiesta's, and carnivals.  The entire population turns out when some patriotic or religious anniversary is marked with processions, speeches, dancing, and sports events.  In remote Indian towns, on special occasions, ancient tunes are sung to the moon/sun, and played on hand made musical instruments similar to those used 100's of years ago.      Nicaraguan's are utterly devoted to baseball, carnivals, festivals, dancing, tennis, basketball, volleyball, golf, horseback riding, horse racing, swimming, fishing, and also hunting. 

An average man wears a loose shirt, open at the collar, khaki trousers, and woman are most likely to wear the skirt and blouse, some beautifully embroided. Business men wear suits with ties, and upper class woman dressed in the height of the world fasions.

Some Holidays that are celebrated include: New Years Day on January 1st, Holy Thursday and Good Friday in March and April, Labor Day  on May 1st,  Army Day on May 27th, Battle of San Jacinto on September 14th, Independence Day on September 15th, Columbus Day on October 12th, All Saints Day on November 1st, Immaculate Conception Day on December 8th, and last but not least, the same as us, Christmas on December 25th!

Independence Day marks Nicaragua's 1821 independence from Spain. The national holiday, observed on Sep 15, is marked by speeches by the president and other officials. There are also bullfights. However, in these bullfights the bulls are not killed; instead, the matador tries to get on the bull and ride it.

 Fiesta de San Sebastian festival ,is in honor of the he patron saint San Sebastian is known throughout Nicaragua for its traditional street dance-theater performances, including the El Gueguense, El Toro Huaco, and El Gigante. The ritualized dances are performed to the traditional music of flute and drum by dancers wearing plumed hats and elaborate masks and costumes. The Fiesta de San Sebastian is held each Jan 20.
