- Located as it is on
geological rift, Nicaragua is an an area of intense volcanic activity, with
periodic and very destructive earthquakes. Unfortunately, most of this disruptive
natural activity is found in the northwestern, and most heavily populated,
area of the country. One volcano, Mt. Cosiguina, which stands nearly
4,000 feet high, was formed less than a century and a half ago, in a
convulsive explosion that sent clouds of ash as far east as Jamaica.
Beginning with Mt. Cosiguina, which is the northernmost, there is a chain of
more than twenty volcanoes in all, some of them periodically smouldering,
including Momotombo, whose beautiful volcanic cone is situated to the
northwest of Lake Managua. Within the bounds of Lake Nicaragua itself,
there are two volcanoes on Island of Ometepe, largest of lake's many
isles. The most continuously active volcano is Masaya Caldera,
just west of Granada, the nation's second most important city.
Earthquakes have taken a high toll in destruction and human life.
Managua, the capital, was shattered by an earthquake and fire in 1931, and
again in 1972-a catastrophe from which the city has not yet fully recovered.
- The total population
recently is 4,720,000. And the population of the capital, Managua [not
recently] is 250,000.
- The temperature of
Nicaragua is affected principally by warm winds on both coasts, and by
altitude. For the most part, the major areas of settlement are typically
tropical, hot and humid at noon, warm in the morning, and afternoon, and
agreeably cool at night. As in other tropical areas, altitude has a
moderating effect on both heat and humidity, the highland areas of the
northwestern uplands being noticeably cool.
- The Indians, only a
few of the pure blooded Indians still speak a native dialect and practice
the old customs of tribes.
- To the North of
Nicaragua, there is Honduras, and to the South, there is Costa Rica
- The capital is
Managua.
