The Wish

                                                                By: Alyssa

Katherine’s house looked like a blur of white through her tearstained eyes. She kicked a gray stone up her gravel driveway.

Although it was mid November, Katherine was hot with anger

"I hate Sarah!" sobbed Katherine as she stomped up the porch steps to her front door.

She threw her backpack on the stairs and stormed up to her room. She slammed her door, stalked over to her photo album and tore up nearly half the pictures in it.

"I hate you Sarah!" she hissed as if she were speaking to the blond haired girl in each

picture she tore up. She turned and looked out the window at the clouded sky,

"I wish Sarah would just disappear!" She cried.

The next morning Katherine woke up early so she decided to walk to school. It was a short walk to Noah Wallace and an easy one. The fallen leaves crunched beneath her feet as she made her way across the schoolyard and towards the towering brick building. A large group of girls were clustered together on the stone steps. Katherine walked over to them curious about what they were talking about.

"Did you hear what happened to Sarah last night!" exclaimed a tall skinny fifth grader.

"Yes, her parents called the police because she is missing!" whispered another girl, who was wearing a stylish pink top with a pair of flared blue jeans.

"I hope they find her!" cried a short chubby girl, who slightly resembled an oversized pig. The girls continued gossiping on and on about the subject. But Katherine wasn’t listening.

Katherine had turned away from the crowed of girls as panic struck her. She had almost forgotten about the wish. Her stomach lurched and she felt dizzy. It had really happened, Sarah had disappeared!

7 Years Later

"She’s coming!" screamed Missy excitedly bouncing up and down nearly knocking over the vase resting on the kitchen table

"Who is?" asked Katherine, looking up from the heap of homework piled on the kitchen table.

"My new friend Sarah!" Missy exclaimed, her eyes eager with anticipation.

"Big deal, I always have friends over stupid," snorted Katherine as threw her finished homework into her backpack and climbed the stairs to her room. She collapsed slowly on the couch and switched on the silver radio. Her feet tapped lazily to the music as she stared outside. As she gazed outside she noticed a short girl about Missy’s age approaching the house. She had pale blond hair and took slow strides as if something was pushing her from moving forward.

What’s her problem? Thought Katherine as the girl made her way across the front lawn. But her thoughts were interrupted by an annoying yell from downstairs.

"Sarah’s here!" hollered Missy from downstairs.

"Ughhhh!" groaned Katherine as her knobby hands switched off the radio and started downstairs to greet her sister’s friend. As the friend came in sight she noticed that it was the same girl she saw out of her window. Her skin was white as dove’s feathers and her eyes were bluer than an ocean.

She glanced at Katherine, smiled, and greeted her,

"I’m Sarah, " she said slowly.

Suddenly Katherine turned pale. The voice! It was so familiar, Katherine knew she had made an acquaintance with this girl before. She thought for a second and then realized it!

She sprinted up to her room and dove under the bedcovers. Pain and fear spread over her like a spilled water jug.

"Sarah!" she cried

That night Katherine couldn’t get to sleep. She tossed and turned in her bed, thinking about Sarah.

"It was an accident," she reassured herself, "I didn’t mean it."

But even so Katherine felt she had full responsibility for her friends disappearance

"I wish I could go back in time and change what happened." She sobbed. Suddenly her eyes shot open, realizing what she just said. Then she relaxed, "That couldn’t happen," she chuckled nervously

"I must be coming down with something." But she was wrong.

"Katherine!" her mother called, "time for school!"

Katherine slowly opened her eyes and gazed around the antique white room.

"That’s strange, where’s my CD player and my computer?" she questioned as she rolled out of bed and walked over to the mirror.

"AAAAAA!" she screamed as she stared back at the 8-year-old freckle face girl in the mirror.

"This isn’t happening!" she screamed as she looked around the bright room. All of a sudden a

toddler burst into the room.

"Missy?" Katherine cried in disbelief.

"Kafwin!" squealed the toddler as she hugged Katherine’s knees.

"Get off you crazed toddler!" cried Katherine forcing the toddler off her legs. Katherine pried the excited toddler off and packed her bag for school. But she wasn’t going to high school she was going to the elementary.

"Ughhhh!" screamed Katherine as she threw herself on her bed. The bed shook as if it were

supporting a skyscraper."I hate Sarah!" she cried, but then threw her hands over her mouth once she realized what she

had said. She tried to hold her angry words in but hateful words kept on building in her head. Don’t act like an 8-year-old! Katherine thought. " I hate Sarah, I hate her!" she quickly hollered again.

Don’t say it said a strange voice in her head, no, make the wish, said an even stronger voice. Don’t said

The other, do, said the second. Don’t, do, don’t, do, don’t, do. Sweat poured down her freckled face she

Felt dizzy, don’t, do, don’t, do, don’t, do.

"Noooooo!" Katherine screamed as she fainted on the floor.

"Katherine?" whispered her mother.

Katherine opened her eyes and stared across the spacious living room." I had the strangest dream!" Katherine chuckled.

"You fainted!" cried a familiar voice. She looked up and saw a familiar blue eyed face.

"Sarah!" she hollered in disbelief leaping off the couch and sprinting towards her friend.

"Who’d ya think it was?" asked Sarah. Katherine stared at Sarah, she looked much older then Katherine remembered her.

"Are you sure you’re feeling okay?" questioned Sarah with concern.

"Don’t worry, I’m fine," reassured Katherine.

"Will you guys shut up, I’m trying to do my homework here!" yelled Missy from the kitchen.

Katherine chuckled as she hurried to join Sarah, who was heading towards the blue Chrysler parked in the newly paved driveway. As she looked in the direction Sarah was walking, Katherine knew that nothing like that stupid fight would ever separate she and Sarah again.
