| March has been a busy month on the
Odyssey Team. Since our return from the February break, students have been
busy with a variety of projects and have been generally very
productive.
Parents and guardians should remember that April 6
& 7 are parent/student/teacher conference days. If you submitted a
conference form it should have been mailed back to you by now with your
scheduled time.
In the classrooms:
- In LA students have just completed their writing
to inform pieces on the middle ages. These papers will now be used in
SS in collaboration with other students who have written about the
same topic. Students will create a video documentary on their topic
(see below). Presently we are reading Avi's novel Crispin,
which is a marvelous novel set in the Middle Ages. Students will
investigate setting, character and plot while also developing
interpretive questions.
- In SS we spent the first two weeks back from
break doing an investigation of comparative religions. This topic
arises out of our study of ancient cultures and allows students to
make connections between some of the major religions of Europe. We are
now developing our storyboards for the video documentary on Middle
Ages topics in connection with our general study of Medieval
times.
- In science students completed their Vermont
mammal web pages and are doing the final edit to launch them on our
web site. Next they completed several in class projects relating to
the characteristics of insects. They then built their own insect
projects at home and shared them with the team. Birds and astronomy
are on the horizon for further study.
Finally a note about home support for students.
Sixth grade is a time when students are trying to pull away and may
discourage parents form checking and reviewing their work. It is also a
time when some students are so distracted by other interests that their
work begins to slide. If you want your child to be successful, check in
and keep abreast of their work. The typical sixth grader cannot do it
alone.
