January

Students arrived back from the holidays with a typical mixture of joy and dismay. They were happy to see their friends, as usual, but needed some encouragement to get to work. As is always the case, this didn't take very long.

  • In LA, we are beginning preparations for our production of William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar.  Roles have been cast, and rehearsals begin on January 18th. Our performance will be February 15th at 5:00 PM and February 16th and 8:00 AM. If you are wondering what this might look like, click here for photos of last year's performance.
  • SS, in connection with our performances we are studying ancient Rome in SS. Students will read for background info, using note-taking strategies we've been practicing all year. They will work in partners to create a time-travel brochure that covers the major attractions of this period in history. They will also study European geography.
Right after the holiday break students wrapped up our study of ancient Greece with a re-enactment of the trial of Socrates. This simulation allows students to reflect on the limits  of  free speech and discuss tradeoffs that come form limiting free speech in society.
  • In math students have been working with geo boards studying geometric shapes.
  • In science students are wrapping up study of the bobcat habitat and are creating a blended accordion art of the bobcat and elements of its habitat. Student will start in the next week or so creating web pages explaining Vermont mammals.
  • The Odyssey Team will be off to the Audubon Center in Huntington right before winter break. Students will learn about how mammals cope with winter and also learn about winter tracking techniques.
  • Report cards are due out at the end of January, beginning of February. We will be meeting with students to review there progress and discuss goals during this time. Any parents who think they may need a conference should contact us as soon as possible after receiving the report cards.

We would like to mention again that we  are excited to introduce to the Odyssey family our two new student teachers.. Both are from Champlain College. Ms. Heather Caisse is from Chesterfield, New Hampshire and has looked forward to becoming a teacher for as long as she can remember. Mr. Peter Koutroulis is from Southern Maine and looks forward to completing technology projects with the Odyssey students. We're excited to have them both. They have already begun teaching selected lessons and are becoming quickly acquainted with our students.
