                                                When Jade Makes the Team

                                                      By Katrina

Jade was starting 7th grade. She could never make a basket. She practiced every day after school. She told her mom that she was staying after school to shoot hoops. Her mom said, “Go for it”.

Jade woke up early Monday morning to eat her nutritious breakfast. She had a bowl of cereal, an apple, and orange juice. She asked if she could take a healthy thing to eat at lunch.

Then Jade goes back up stairs to get dressed and brush her teeth and hair. She got her skateboard and went down to the gym. Jade looked around, the gym is empty,” she said to herself. Jade grabs the basketball and started shooting some hoops. Jade hears the basketball bouncing. Whenever Jade went to make a basket she always missed. After about 1 hour and 30 minutes she got tired. Jade is soaked in sweat. Jade decides to take a brake.

Jade goes to get a drink of water, her mouth was dry. Jade goes to get a drink of water because shes says,” I’m tursty.”After Jade takes a brake, She starts to shoot more baskets. Jade then wants to go home, but she wants to play more basketball. She can’t make up her. She decided to flip a coin. Heads is more basketball and tails is going home. She flipped the coin. It landed on… HEADS. So she stayed and played a little longer.

Next week was basketball tryouts at South Burlington Middle School. Jade was in 7th grade. Jade was getting a drink at the water fountain and noticed a sign. The sign read 7th grade basketball tryouts. Jade realized she has never been on a team before.

Jade noticed that it was 1 week before basketball tryouts. She practiced everyday after school. Even on weekends. Jade practiced for at least 1 hour and 30 minutes. Jade kept getting a little better everyday.

It was the day before the tryouts. Jade felt anxious, worried, nervous, and yet                                determined about the tryouts. She is really athletic.  Jade practiced for 4 hours straight until she feels confident in her shooting and dribbling. Her defense was getting better. She realized that she never played anyone.

Jade knew that today was the day before the tryouts. She made a wish. She wished that hopefully she made the team. Jade went to where the tryouts were held. It was Jade's turn. She shot the basketball and said under her breath "Don't miss, don't miss.” The basketball went into the hoop. The coach was pleased with Jade's shot. Jade checked the mail and saw that there was a letter from the coach. She wondered, “ Will I make the team?” She opened the envelope. She reads the letter. Jade found out she’s on the team.
