Location and Language

Haiti is a very nice island its climate is very warm weather where the mountains cut off east trade winds.  Haiti's relative location is West of the Dominican republic, East of Mexico, North of South America, and south of the Bahamas.  The absolute location is 73 degrees west longitude and 18 degrees north latitude.  The capital of Haiti is Port-au-Price.  The language of Haiti is a mixture of French and Creole.  Creole is the language of every day life, While French is the language that of refinement, a passport to social promotion.  For more that a century after independence French was the only official language of the country,  even though  an overwhelming proportion of the population could not understand it.  It was only 1969, during the presidency of François Duvaleir, that Creole was granted legal to speak.

Religion and Government

One of the very amazing  things about Haiti is there government.  After about two centuries Haiti's still struggling for democracy.  Haiti is divided into nine different departments that are responsible for the administration of the local government.  The Haiti constitution was adopted on March 1987 that declares Haiti to be a republic country with three branches of government like the United states of America: Executive, Legislative, and Judicial.  In Haiti they have Mulattoes which is decedents of European colonists and African slaves they now control the government and most of the professions.  The people of Haiti have many religions but the most popular one is Voodoo.  It is the most  misunderstood religion in the country of Haiti.  This is the national religion of the Haitian people and a vital force in politics and culture. Voodoo is based on a mixture of superstitions and is celebrated through song and dance.

Leisure and Entertainment

In Haiti, for entertainment they have clubs that offer dancing, banquets, golf, tennis, and swimming.  Another very popular pastime that the Haitians watch, is cockfighting, which is when they take two roosters in a wooden arena and watch the roosters fight each other while having blades in their claws to attack the other rooster.  The people of Haiti also play soccer,  gambling  games, and festivals. Their festivals are on Christmas, Mardi Gras, and The Day Of The Dead.  The Day of the Dead is when the entire day is given over to celebrating and announcing the dead, it is on November 2nd. In Haiti, they tell many stories to pass the time. The person who tells all of the stories is called the maitre conte.

Food and Clothing.

The people in Haiti,  are usually very poor.  For breakfast, they will drink coffee, and sometimes eat sour bread. At lunch they will eat a small dish of rice and beans, or a stew with a smell piece of meat.  They also eat corn, millet, and yam. Also, they sometimes snack on sugarcane, or green mangoes to satisfy  their hunger pains. The times when they eat the most is on the Day of The Dead. Some common clothing that they wear is some very colorful clothes that is made by light cotton, that is worn during the day. The men usually wear a light T-shirt, and a pair of trousers, during the day.
