It was a beautiful morning on the Cape Cod shore. The air was warm and a little humid. It smelled salty and fishy. I was just sitting down to a bowl of Lucky Charms, when my mom told me that there was a rumor of buried gold on the shore in front of our beach cottage! As soon as I realized what I heard, I ditched the cereal, dashed to my room, jumped into some old clothes and ran out the door before my mom could stop me.
I was headed to my friend’s cottages, Jenna and Avery. Their beach cottages were a couple of blocks away. On the way to Jenna’s, I noticed how cute the cottages looked, with flower boxes and sea grass. It looked like a picture on a post card. When I arrived at Jenna’s cottage I thought I was going to fall apart from sprinting down the street. I quickly knocked on the door. “Megan, what are you doing here at 8:30 in the morning?” Jenna asked impatiently.
“Just
get some clothes on and I’ll tell you on the way back to my house,” I told
her. Together we quickly jogged to Avery’s house. I knocked on the door of
Avery’s cottage. Avery answered the door and I told him the same thing, to get
some clothes on and follow me. On
the way back to my cottage I told them that there was a rumor of buried gold,
and we were going to try to find it.
When
we arrived at my house I dug out the old shovels from the shed.
“Whoa! Those shovels look ancient!” remarked Avery.
“Well
it’s better than using our hands.” I said. I had to agree though, because
they did look really old. “I think we’re all set, right?”
“Yup!”
Jenna and Avery yelled.
“Okay
then, lets get to it!” I replied.
All
three of us marched gladly down to the beach eager to find some gold.
“Isn’t
this so exciting”, Jenna told me. “I mean, we as 12 year olds could actually
find real gold!”
This
was exciting I thought. Until then it started just to hit me that pretty soon we
could be millionaires if we find the gold. It didn’t seem true!
Jenna
and Avery started digging and so did I. After about 20 minutes of digging, which
felt like an hour, I was starting to get really tired and hot. I was sweating
like crazy. The sun was so strong I couldn’t take it any more.
“I’m
going up to the cottage to get all of us a glass of ice cold water,” I told
them, but they didn’t seem to notice.
When
I came back, Jenna and Avery were shouting and screaming, jumping all over the
place acting like maniacs.
“What’s
going on?” I asked.
“We
found a treasure map that leads to the gold!” Jenna and Avery called out with
excitement. I just stood there, with my mouth wide open, staring at them in awe.
“Where does it say the gold is?” I
asked.
“According
to this map it shows the gold is over by the bridge of the Mucky River,” Avery
said really fast.
“Then
let’s go over there and dig,” I said.
With
our adrenalin pumping, we raced over to the bridge. Once there, we all started
digging feverishly. After a while
of digging under the hot sun Jenna called out, “Quick, come over here I think
I found it!”
I
ran over, and sure enough Jenna pulled out a rusty green bucket over flowing
with gold necklaces, bracelets and chunks of gold with different colored
crystals!!! The gold looked so pretty glimmering in the sunlight.
Jenna
and I started jumping up and down screaming! All of our smiles were so big, I
don’t know if they’ll ever be that big again! Avery was dancing around
hollering like his favorite football team just won the World Series.
Before
long I saw news reporters coming and taking millions of pictures of Jenna, Avery
and me. I felt like a rich fashion model.
“So,
how does it felt to have found the gold as a 12 year old?” one of the news
reporters asked me.
“Well,
I feel very proud of my self and I’m amazed that I accomplished my goal.
Thanks to my friends Jenna and Avery! I couldn’t have done it without them!”
I told the news reporter as he video taped me. Now that we found the gold I was
wondering what was going to happen to it.
Then
out of the blue, a policeman came up to the three of us and said,
“Congratulations, I am proud to tell you that each one of you gets to keep one
fourth of the gold, and the last fourth is going to be put in the local museum.
A
few days later we went to the museum where they held a party just for us. They
put our names on a plaque in honor of our discovery. A picture of us was on the
front page of the newspaper and everyone talked about us for a couple of days.
Then I thought, what would our next adventure be?
