Location and Language

Chile is the longest narrow country in the world located in South America. The entire country of Chile is located south of the equator so the seasons are different from North America’s seasons. For Chileans December and January is the warmest season and July and August is the coldest season. Chile’s relative location is east of the Pacific Ocean, west of Argentina, south of Peru, north of Antarctica, and southwest of Bolivia. The capital of Chile is Santiago. Santiago’s absolute location is approximately 33°S, 71°W.

Religion and Government

 The current Chilean President is Ricardo Lagos. 1988 marked the end of a dictatorship in Chile and the return to democracy. The current president works in the capitol of Chile

Religion is important to the Chilean culture. Approximately, 90% of Chileans are Roman Catholics. Roman Catholics believe that the Pope is the leader of the church and what he says is unquestionable. Fewer than 10% are Protestant.  There is also a tribal religion practiced by the Mapuche Indians. The Mapuche Indians of Chile have roots in Incan mythology and Christian teaching. Like in Christianity, Mapuche Indians believe in the idea of a supreme being.

 

Leisure and Entertainment

  Chileans play many different kinds of sports for entertainment and leisure.  The sports they play are rugby, tennis, golf, volleyball, basketball, fishing, and soccer.  In Chile the Chileans call soccer futbol. Soccer is an important event in Chile.  Many kids in Chile want to play soccer.  Soccer is one of the biggest sports in Chile. Skiing in the Andes mountain.

 

   In Chile rodeo is a big event in Chile.  Chileans go to watch the rodeo.  In Chile if you are in a rodeo if you win you don’t get money you get trophies or certificates.  Chileans do rodeo for fun not for competition.   People in Chile get together to watch rodeo.  Rodeo is another big event.

 

 

Food and Clothing

      

 In Chile people eat a lot of seafood.  In Chile fish is very cheep so a lot of people buy it.  In Chile Chileans eat tiny rock lobster.  They also eat clams in Chile.  Fish is one of the foods that they eat. 

 

   Most Chileans dress like North Americans.  In Chile women and girls do not wear full-length dresses.  Shorts are only worn during the day in beach towns. Most people wear jeans when they are shopping.  Usually they wear shorts only on the weekends.
