The Talking Carrot

The story takes place at my house in South Burlington.  My house is as white as snow and the inside is as blue as the sky.

One morning, my mom told me to go outside and get some vegetables out of the garden.  I went out to the garden and grabbed a dirt-covered carrot.   It hollered out, “Get your hands off me.” I ran inside and told my mom about the carrot, but she didn’t believe me.  I brought him up to my room and asked him what he eats and what he drinks.  He said, “I eat soil and drink ground water.”

He told me that he needed a house so I made him a little house.  The next day his house was demolished and he was as tall as a bookcase.  He asked me, “Where are you going?”

I said, “I am going to school.”

He asked me, “Can I go?” I said no.  He asked me why.  I told him he would scare the kids and the teacher.

Several years passed and he kept on growing. Mom wants to cook him.  I told her she couldn’t because he was my friend.  She said we could make some money from selling cooked carrot.  He was in my room packing to go to college.  The next day we went to St. Michaels College.

He got a career as a teacher because he was so smart.  Next year I am going to be in his class.  He is going to be my teacher.  A year passed and my voice and my knees were shaky.  Mr. Carrot asked me if I was nervous.  I told him, I was nervous.

The second semester came.  Mr. Carrot was getting stricter.  I forgot my homework three times and I got detention.  I told my best friend this is going to be a long year.  My friend and I told Mr. Carrot that we wouldn’t miss any more work.  Mr. Carrot said to us, “I don’t think you’ll forget your homework because next time you will have two zeros.”

Mr. Carrot told me that I could do better on my schoolwork.  My report card had B-‘s and C-‘s.  My mom said that as long as I tried my best that she still would be proud of me.  I tried harder, and then the end of the year came.  My report card came, and I had the same grades.

At the end of the day, Mr. Carrot told the class he was retiring from being a teacher.  He decided that he was going to be a lawyer and live in Boston.  As for me, I am glad because he was a mean teacher and yet I felt said because he was my friend.  The thing I learned about life, that people can change for the better or the worst.
