News from the Odyssey Team

Students from the Odyssey Team took a trip to Mt. Philo in October. We took the hike up the trail and after lunch did dome work with contour maps and tree identification. The trip provided a nice mix of team building and curriculum connections. Students and adults did find it a bit chilly with the 20-mile per hour winds.

On November 22 we attended a performance of Lilly’s Crossing, an adaptation of a book we read in Reading Quest. It was a great opportunity for students to compare their own interpretation of events with professional theatre. Our next trip to the Flynn will be in early December to attend a performance called Wild about Wolfgang by the VSO.

Congratulations to our Pat on the Back Award winners for the first quarter. They are Ben Lidofsky, Kristy Findley, Megan Porter, Liz Bernier and Austin Young. These students have set an excellent example of respectful behavior and good citizenship.

Students have begun construction of the Odyssey Team web site. Students will create personal index pages and publish book reviews, stories and other projects throughout the year.

• In social studies students are now in the process of constructing web pages for a culture project on countries of the Western Hemisphere.

• In science students have completed their unit on tree identification and classification. Leaf projects were presented to the class and were very well done.

• In math students have completed their unit on number theory, called Prime Time. We have begun a new unit entitled Data About Us where students will gather , interpret and display data.

• Finally, in LA we are following up our study of the literary elements in short stories by writing our own original stories.
