Although I do not consider myself to be a "poetry expert," I love poetry and love teaching it to sixth graders. Of all of the things we do during the school year it is the most fun and rewarding. I think this is mainly because the students enjoy it, they are capable of doing it well and it often reveals something about them that I didn't know before. Poetry is the perfect medium for practicing with figurative and vivid language. Many of these poems have great flashes of phrasing that show the investment of the writer in the process of presenting a meaningful image or thought. Students read model poetry and wrote about thirteen different poems of varying length and types. They would love to receive a comment from you, send it to my email box.
